Projekt BREAK!

BREAK! – overcoming gender stereotypes in Europe through cross-media learning

BREAK! Project aims to contribute to overcoming educational and occupational gender segregation by reaching out to young people aged 13-30 through innovative cross-media tools and practices that are up to date with nowadays youth.

The project will be carried out by the Estonian Gender Equality and Equal Treatment Commissioners office as a lead partner, Estonian Public Broadcasting, Foundation Innove, Tallinn University, Office of the Equal Opportunities Ombudsperson in Lithuania and the Centre for Gender Equality in Iceland. The project that takes place for 30 months between 2017 and 2019, is mainly financed by the European Commission.

In the center of the cross-media project is TV SERIES WHY NOT?!, which is about Anna Sooväli’s fascinating journey from the class nerd to a cool rap-artist NoJik. Moreover, life of Anna’s social life and life of her family members takes rather unexpected turns. In total there are 10 episodes, each lasting for 28 minutes. First episode in Estonian aired on ETV on 29th of October 2018 and in Russian on ETV+ on 3rd of October 2018. Episodes are accessible from ETV’s website. In 2019 WHY NOT?! will also air in Lithuania and Iceland.

Moreover, STUDY MATERIALS for teachers, on how to talk about (gender) stereotypes to the students in different classes and in different age groups will be produced. Study materials in Estonian, English, Russian, Icelandic, Polish and Lithuanian will soon be freely accessible from the project’s website and from a digital study materials portal e-koolikott.

Additionally, there will be TRAININGS FOR TEACHERS AND CAREER COUNCELLORS, on how to use produced study materials will start in Estonia in February 2019. You can find more information about the trainings in Estonian from here and in Russian from here. Trainings for teachers and career counsellors will take place in Estonia, Lithuania and Iceland.

Furthermore, RADIO SHOWS, where different equality topics are considered more broadly were produced. All in all, there are 10 radio shows in Estonian. These shows aired on Vikerraadio on every second Tuesday at 10.05. First radio show in Estonian “Ühisosa” aired on Vikerraadio on 26th of October 2018. Radio shows are accessible on Vikerraadio’s webpage as well as on the project’s website.

Moreover, there are radio shows in Russian language. First of these aired on 6th of September 2018 on Radio 4 and since then the radio shows are aired on every second Tuesday at 14.05. Radio shows are accessible on Radio 4’s webpage. Radio shows will also air in Icelandic in Iceland. More information about these radio shows will be soon available.

There were 15  COUNTY VISITS to Estonian counties on 2018, where we introduced the project to youngsters. This means we visited one school in every county.
